About Laura
Artist's Statement
Fascinations for intensely rich colors and complex textures pulled me toward enticing,
energetic, and exciting designs. Having years of experience with various forms of needlework, I made
my first quilt in 1989.
It served as a portal into which I clearly saw the enduring passion of my life. I now
produce art quilts, art to wear, and
hand dyed and painted silk from vintage kimono.
Currently, I am using an intuitive collage approach with these fabrics in quilt designs.
I prefer creating my own cloth; using surface design techniques such as
hand dyeing, stamping, foiling, painting,
stenciling, photo transfer, etc. Additional texture is built through layering of fabric, and the
inclusion of various fibers. Circular and
Nature themes often appear in my quilt
designs.
From my studio, wearable art is accomplished through the primary use of my unique
overdyed and hand painted kimono fabric.
