Learn an easy collage technique, which promotes creativity without the technical demands of traditional piecing. Have fun integrating cottons, silks, and synthetics to create a small wall hanging (approximately 18" x 24") by working spontaneously and directly with fabric.
SUPPLY LIST:
Select several "theme fabrics" which have fairly large design elements, i.e. single large flower or cluster of flowers, geometric shapes, mola designs, figures of people, objects, animals, fish, birds, etc. These design elements should be simple enough that you can easily cut around them with a scissors. Cottons, silks, synthetics are all fine--bring a variety of colors, values, and textures in small amounts (fat quarter size or less).
1/2 yard (minimum) of a fabric suitable for the background; it will work best if either very light or very dark. Hand dyed fabrics work well for backgrounds, if you have them. Audition your theme fabrics against potential backgrounds to determine what you like best and bring several possibilities. Note: If you would prefer to work with a garment for your collage project, select a pattern, and cut out the pattern pieces for your background. Sew only the shoulder seams together before bringing it to class.
1 yard of Steam-a-Seam 2 ( 12" wide double-stick fusible). If you can't find this, just bring whatever fusible that is easily available such as Wonder-Under.
1 yard of any cotton fabric for a backing. This fabric will not show in the finished project, so it’s a good way to use up some of those fabrics from your stash that you no longer find exciting.
Basic sewing supplies (scissors, rotary cutter/mat, LOTS of pins).
Optional: The following items help build up layers in your collage, if you have them:
-Tulle, in colors complimentary to your theme fabric; or transparent organza
-Nylon scarves (these can be found at thrift stores; the kind so thin you can read newsprint through them).
-Interesting ribbons, braiding, or any other textiles which might work in your collage.
